Volume 15, Issue 6

On the cover: Epifluoresence image of RPE-hTERT cells depleted of the BBSome subunit BBIP10. Microtubules are shown in red and the centrosomal marker pericentrin is in white. Reduced levels of acetylated tubulin are seen as rare green strands and constitute the phenotypic hallmark of BBIP10-depleted cells. The loss of acetylated microtubules is specific to the depletion of BBIP10, and microtubule acetylation remains unaffected by the depletion of other BBSome subunits. New Signaling Series

The review on Hedgehog signaling in this issue is the first in a new series we will be featuring during 2009 on signaling pathways.

Watch in future issues for additional reviews on different pathways, including Notch, Wnt, TGFβ and more!

For our cell biologist readers...

You will be able to pick up a free copy of this issue of Developmental Cell from the Cell Press booth at the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) meeting, December 13th-17th.

Chromosomal Dynamics at the Shh Locus: Limb Bud-Specific Differential Regulation of Competence and Active Transcription
Takanori Amano, Tomoko Sagai, Hideyuki Tanabe, Yoichi Mizushina, Hiromi Nakazawa, and Toshihiko Shiroishi

Featured Article

Dyrk1A gene dosage is linked to Down Syndrome. Laguna et al. find that DYRK1A, which is a kinase, controls the organization and function of the mouse retina via phosphorylation of caspase-9.

Issue Highlights

Rutkowski and colleagues reveal an unexpected link between ER stress and fatty liver disease, the most common liver disorder in western countries.
Willemsen et al. show that the Arabidopsis NAC-domain transcription factors, FEZ and SOMBRERO, control the orientation of cell division in root stem cells.
Waxman et al. provide evidence that organ size is regulated by communication between organ fields, suggesting potential new causes for syndromes affecting both heart and forelimb.
